Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was hired by the Indianapolis Colts as a game-day consultant to help determine when the team should challenge plays. He had been actively seeking employment after resigning from Ohio State on May 30 amid a damaging NCAA scandal.
Newton to start for Panthers
Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 draft pick Cam Newton will start at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers in their opener, according to rookie coach Ron Rivera.

Leilani Mitchell scored 24 points, hitting six three-pointers, as the Liberty clinched a playoff spot with a 78-62 win over host Minnesota. Cappie Pondexter had 13 points and seven assists for the Liberty (18-13). Despite the loss, the Lynx (24-7) clinched the WNBA's best record. "It's a dejected locker room," coach Cheryl Reeve said. "Kind of weird. You know, you clinch the best overall record and I've got towels over heads and we're dejected.''

Troy Matteson shot a 6-under-par 65 to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the PGA Tour's Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Mass. Phil Mickelson, using a belly putter for the first time in his career, shot a 70 . . .
