Skipper Jimmy Spithill and defending champion Oracle Team USA sped past Emirates Team New Zealand on the upwind third leg to win their astonishing seventh straight race and force a deciding 19th race in the longest America's Cup ever. All but defeated a week ago, Oracle Team USA tied the faltering Kiwis 8-8 on the scoreboard by winning its 10th race overall in San Francisco Bay. Oracle was docked two points for illegally modifying boats in warmup regattas. The deciding race is scheduled for this afternoon.

Lion breaks arm on pizza run

Detroit Lions receiver Nate Burleson broke his arm in a single-car accident early yesterday after he reached over to keep two pizza boxes from falling off the front passenger seat, authorities said. Burleson's car hit a center median wall on a highway and he was taken to a local hospital. Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said alcohol was not a factor in the crash at 2:25 a.m. . . . Dallas Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer could need microfracture surgery on his left knee and may miss the rest of the season.

Penn St. scholarships restored

The NCAA will restore the football scholarships Penn State lost in the crushing sanctions imposed after the Jerry Sandusky scandal, as the organization recognizes that the university has pushed ahead with "significant momentum" to make sweeping changes. Penn State will have five scholarships added back each year starting in 2014-2015, with the full complement of 85 scholarships set for 2016-2017, NCAA officials said.

Venus upends Azarenka

Venus Williams upset top-seeded Victoria Azarenka, 6-2, 6-4, in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Azarenka said that she wasn't well and hadn't been able to practice for three days. "She didn't seem like herself at all," Williams said.

Prosecutors want to press case

Prosecutors say they intend to pursue domestic assault charges against Boston Celtics forward Jared Sullinger, even though his accuser wants to drop the case. The 21-year-old Sullinger appeared in Waltham District Court on Monday to face charges of assault and battery, destruction of property and witness intimidation in connection with the Aug. 31 confrontation with his girlfriend at his Waltham home. -- AP
