TENNISU.S. alive in Davis Cup

Mike and Bob Bryan kept the United States alive in it first-round Davis Cup match against Britain at Glasgow yesterday. The brothers held off a comeback by Jamie Murray and Dominic Inglot to win the doubles against Britain 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-7 (8), 9-7, reducing the Americans' deficit to 2-1. Britain remains the big favorite to advance to a quarterfinal against France because Andy Murray, the former Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion, is playing John Isner in the first of today's reverse singles. Isner lost a grueling five-setter against James Ward that lasted almost five hours on Friday.

Gordon crashes, cedes pole

Jeff Gordon crashed during the final practice before today's race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where his pole-winning car was damaged enough that Hendrick Motorsports pulled out a backup Chevrolet. Gordon had won the pole, but will have to drop to the rear of the field at the start of the race because he changed cars. The accident happened in the final minutes of Saturday practice when Danica Patrick spun in front of him and Gordon was unable to avoid her car.

NHLMarchand boosts Boston

Boston's Brad Marchand scored the tying goal and game-winner for a 3-2 victory over visiting Philadelphia. Marchand sent it to OT with 14.1 seconds left in regulation and scored the winning goal with 1:08 to play in overtime, helping the Bruins in their fight for the Eastern Conference's eighth and final playoff berth. -- APCOLLEGES

Kvilhaug gets 300th win

After battling through a seven-game losing streak, Amy Kvilhaug picked up her 300th career victory as a head coach yesterday, combining 127 wins at Radford and 173 at St. John's as the Red Storm women's softball team defeated Stony Brook, 8-5, in the opening game of the JMU Dukes Invitational at Harrisonburg, Virginia.
