Boston's Varitek retires
Jason Varitek officially announced his retirement Thursday night, bringing to an end a beloved 15-year career with the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox offered the 39-year-old a chance to come to camp on a minor-league contract, but he declined. He said, "The hardest thing to do is walk away from your teammates." The captain helped lead the Red Sox to two World Series titles. He caught a record four no-hitters and played in three All-Star games.
Molina to get $75M
The Cardinals have agreed to a five-year, $75-million contract with four-time Gold Glove catcher Yadier Molina that will keep him in St. Louis through the 2017 season. Molina batted .305 in 2011 with 14 home runs and 65 RBIs, and added 12 RBIs during the team's World Series title run.
GOLF
Love aces and leads
Davis Love III looked more like a player than a Ryder Cup captain at the Honda Classic at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Love made a hole-in-one on the 197-yard fifth hole and tied the course record at PGA National with a 6-under 64, giving him a two-shot lead. He took advantage of soft and relatively calm conditions in the morning. Rory McIlroy was in the group at 66, needing a win this week to go to No. 1 in the world. Tiger Woods twice lost momentum with sloppy bogeys and failed to convert a routine up-and-down on the par-5 18th for a 1-over 71. He was seven shots out of the lead, right on the cut line going into Friday.
COURTS
More Sandusky details filed
A court filing by prosecutors in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case said his alleged victims ranged in age from 8 to 17, and that crimes involving eight of the boys occurred on the Penn State University campus. The attorney general's office issued a "bill of particulars" that said crimes involving one boy took place in Florida and Texas, while another boy was abused at his own school. COLLEGES
