Couples relishes

Senior British Open

Fred Couples won the Senior British Open in Turnberry, Scotland, by two strokes over Gary Hallberg yesterday after holing a 25-foot putt to finish with consecutive birdies.

The 1992 Masters champion shot 3-under-par 67 in the final round to finish at 9-under 271 on the Ailsa course and win his first tournament in Britain. Hallberg shot 66, equaling the best round of the day with American Mark Calcavecchia and Carl Mason. Bernhard Langer dropped five shots in five holes to shoot a 75 and slip into a tie for sixth.

Piercy hangs on

Scott Piercy made four straight birdies from Nos. 2 to 5 and two-putted from 50 feet for par on the 18th hole to close with 3-under 67 to win the Canadian Open in Ancaster, Ontario. William McGirt and Robert Garrigus were one shot back . . . Inbee Park of South Korea ended her four-year wait for an LPGA Tour title when she shot 6-under 66 to win the Evian Masters in Evian-les-Bains, France, beating veteran Karrie Webb and Stacy Lewis by two shots . . . Bernd Wiesberger rattled off seven birdies in the final 10 holes to shoot 7-under 65 to win the Lyoness Open in Atzenbrugg, Austria.

BASEBALL

Ford called up

Former Ducks outfielder Lew Ford was called up by the Orioles from Triple-A Norfolk. In 184 games over parts of three seasons with the Ducks, Ford, 35, hit .326 with 24 homers and 114 RBIs. He began this season with the Ducks, was signed May 17 by the Orioles and placed at Norfolk, where he was hitting .331 with 11 homers and 40 RBIs in 62 games. Ford is the 13th player to make it to the big leagues after playing for the Ducks, according to the Atlantic League ballclub.
