Serena Williams capped a dominant week with another powerful performance to beat Lucie Safarova, 6-0, 6-1, and capture her first clay-court tournament in four years at the Family Circle Cup Sunday in Charleston, S.C. Williams didn't drop a set in five matches.
Isner propels U.S.
John Isner's big serve and solid forehand proved too strong for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and he beat the Frenchman, 6-3, 7-6 (4) 5-7, 6-3, to give the U.S. a 3-2 win over host France and a spot in the Davis Cup semifinals for the first time since 2008. The U.S. will face defending champion Spain, which beat Austria. Czech Republic topped Serbia and Argentina beat Croatia.
NBACeltics polish off 76ers
Kevin Garnett scored 20 points and Rajon Rondo dished out double-digit assists for the 17th consecutive game, finishing with 15 to help lead the host Celtics to a 103-79 win over the 76ers. Brandon Bass and Avery Bradley added 18 points each and Paul Pierce had 17 for the Celtics, who lead the Atlantic Division by three games over the 76ers and Knicks.
Gerald Green scored 32 points, including a three-pointer with 36.7 seconds left in regulation and a high-flying dunk in overtime, to lead the host Nets to a 122-117 victory over the Cavaliers. Anthony Morrow scored 24 points and Deron Williams had 18 points and 10 assists . . . LeBron James scored 26 points and Chris Bosh had 22 as the host Heat beat the Pistons, 98-75 . . . Tony Parker scored 28 points and Manu Ginobili added 23 as the host Spurs won their 11th straight game, beating the Jazz, 114-104 . . . Jill Maier, April Iannetta, Maryann Miller, Jenn Ward and Brittain Altomare scored three goals each as Hofstra (3-9, 2-1 CAA) defeated George Mason, 23-7, tying the program record for goals in a game set in 1996 against Davidson.
OBITUARY
Ex-Notre Dame QB Kiel, 50
Former Notre Dame quarterback and punter Blair Kiel, who set the record for the longest pass in Fighting Irish history with a 96-yarder to Joe Howard against Georgia Tech in 1981, died yesterday in Columbus, Ind. He was 50.
Bartholomew County coroner Allen Smith said Kiel died at Columbus Regional Hospital. He said an autopsy has been performed and that he's waiting for toxicology results and tissue samples to determine the cause of death.
