Woods doesn't impress in return

Tiger Woods returned from a seven-week break and not much has changed. Woods went 13 holes between his two birdies Thursday in the Frys.com Open in San Martin, Calif., and had to work hard for a 2-over 73. That left him in danger of missing the cut in consecutive starts for the first time in his career. Woods had not played since missing the cut at the PGA Championship in August. He was outplayed in his group by UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay, who had a 69. "That's probably one of the worst putting rounds I've ever had," said Woods, who is six strokes in back of the leaders. "I can't putt the ball any worse than I did today." -- AP

Uncle Mo headed to stud

Mike Repole announced his 3-year-old colt Uncle Mo will stand at Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., when his racing career ends. Repole told Newsday he will have "a significant interest'' in the horse's breeding rights and retain full control of his racing career. "It will be my decision where and when he runs,''' he said.

Repole said an oral agreement was reached in late July, and that the deal was "signed, sealed and delivered'' in early August at Saratoga. The 2010 2-year-old champion is being pointed for the Breeders' Cup Classic Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs. The Nassau County resident left open the possibility that Uncle Mo will race next year.

COURTSBoogaard felony charge dropped

A Minnesota judge threw out a felony charge against the brother of hockey enforcer Derek Boogaard, the former Ranger, for supplying a painkiller that contributed to the player's overdose death earlier this year. Aaron Boogaard, 24, told police he gave his brother an oxycodone pill at the start of a night of partying that led to Boogaard's death May 13 at age 28. Aaron Boogaard was charged with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. In dismissing the charge, Hennepin County District Judge William Howard said the facts of the case didn't support the charge. Howard said that Derek Boogaard had acquired the drugs and asked his brother to hold them, and that Aaron Boogaard's act of giving him the pill was merely returning his property to him. -- AP
