Bonds conviction upheld
Barry Bonds' obstruction of justice conviction was upheld Friday in San Francisco by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, who denied the former baseball star's motion for a new trial or acquittal. Bonds is likely to appeal to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
TENNISWozniacki vs. Cetkovska
Qualifier Petra Cetkovska upset French Open champion Li Na in a third-set tiebreaker to reach the final of the New Haven Open. Cetkovska won, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (9), on her fifth match point. She will meet three-time defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, who defeated Francesca Schiavone, 7-6 (2), 6-3.
GOLFStanford, Miyazato tied
Angela Stanford and Ai Miyazato took advantage of soft greens to become co-leaders after two rounds of the Canadian Women's Open in Mirabel, Quebec. Stanford shot 6-under-par 66 and Miyazato 68 at Hillsdale Golf Club and they were at 11-under 133. Song-Hee Kim was third at 9 under after a 68, with eight players another stroke back, including defending champion Michelle Wie.
Cantlay wins 2 matches
UCLA star Patrick Cantlay won two matches in Erin Hills, Wis., to advance to the U.S. Amateur semifinals, and defending champion Peter Uihlein dropped out in the quarterfinals. Cantlay beat England's Tom Lewis, 3 and 1, in the round of 16, then edged Max Buckley in 19 holes. Jordan Russell beat Uihlein, 2 and 1, to set up a semifinal match with Cantlay.
NBAArtest name change put off
Ron Artest's bid to become Metta World Peace has been delayed. A Los Angeles court commissioner, citing outstanding traffic warrants, delayed ruling on a name change petition by the Lakers forward until Sept. 16. -- AP
