Mediate makes ace, leads with 64 Rocco Mediate had a hole-in-one on the par-3 third hole and shot a bogey-free 7-under 64 Thursday to top the leaderboard in the first round of the Frys.com Open in San Martin, Calif. Paul Goydos, Bo Van Pelt and Ryuji Imada opened with 65s.
Svoboda leads in Miami
Andrew Svoboda, the former St. John's University player, has a share of the lead in the Nationwide Tour's Miccosukee Championship after shooting an 8-under-par 63 in the opening round at the Miccosukee CC in Miami. Svoboda, a top amateur in the Met area before turning pro, is tied with Brandt Jobe.
Lincicome leads with a 61
Brittany Lincicome opened a four-shot lead with an 11-under-par 61 in the first round of the CVS/Pharmacy LPGA Challenge at the Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, Calif.
TENNISIvanovic docked 4 points for 'break'
Next time, Ana Ivanovic will take a bathroom break before her own service game. When she left the court after holding serve in the opening game against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova at the Generali Ladies in Linz, Austria, she was ahead 1-0. When she returned, the match was tied 1-1. Ivanovic was docked four points for taking too long in the bathroom after she felt ill from eating yogurt. Ivanovic still defeated Zahlavova Strycova, 6-3, 6-2. The chair umpire said she was docked one point for every 20 seconds she went over the time limit.
Nadal falls to Melzer in Shanghai
Weary in body and mind, Rafael Nadal, winner of three Grand Slam tournament titles this year, lost to Austria's Jurgen Melzer, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, in the third round of the Shanghai Masters. It was the first time this year the top-ranked Spaniard failed to reach the quarterfinals.

Steven Stamkos, Dominic Moore and Paval Kubina scored goals to help the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Flyers, 3-2, in an emotional return to Philadelphia for Simon Gagne, who spent the first 10 seasons of his career with Philadelphia before being dealt to Tampa Bay during the summer to clear salary-cap space . . . Mike Fisher scored his second goal of the game on a power play 14:03 into the third in host Ottawa's 3-2 victory over Carolina. Brian Elliott made 19 saves after taking over early in the first for Ottawa starter Pascal Leclaire, who left with a lower-body injury.
Arenas leaves with groin injury
Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas, in his first home game since be- ing suspended for bringing guns to the Verizon Center last season, left after three minutes of last night's preseason game against Milwaukee with a strained right groin. Arenas didn't start the game two days after admitting he faked a knee injury and sat out a game. - AP
