St. Anthony's girls fall to New Jersey team

When you're used to winning, two losses in four games can be hard to fathom.

All you can do is regroup.

"It just comes down to mental strength," attacker Izzy Mangan said Saturday after St. Anthony's suffered a 7-5 loss to Summit, a New Jersey team, in a non-league girls lacrosse game at Cold Spring Harbor. The defeat comes two games after a loss to Garden City.

Yesterday's game was part of the Gains for Brains Lacrosse Showcase at Cold Spring Harbor High School. According to Andrew Rappaport, who organized the tournament, proceeds will go to the Making Headway Foundation, which specializes in brain and spinal cord cancer research.

Seven-time defending CHSAA champ St. Anthony's (4-3) had no problems coming out strong. Taylor Mitchell scored twice, and Kait Quinn and Izzy Mangan each had a goal to give the Friars a 4-0 lead six minutes into the game.

But Summit had an answer. Three straight goals to finish the half took its toll on the Friars -- not just on the scoreboard.

"If one thing goes, we kind of let it consume us," goalie Charlotte Campbell (eight saves) said. "We lose focus and fall into quicksand."

Summit outscored St. Anthony's 4-1 in the second half behind some impressive stops by Kady Glynn (12 saves). Catherine Cordrey had three goals.

St. Anthony's Ella Bonafede had three groundballs, two caused turnovers and an assist.

"We can learn from this mistake," said Bonafede. "Hopefully pick it up the rest of the season. I'm confident we can."
