St. Anthony's hopes to keep Fed title on Long Island
St. Anthony's will also get a bye into tomorrow's championship game. St. Anthony's has made one appearance in the Federation tournament and lost in the finals in 1987.
The Friars are trying to become the second consecutive team from the NSCHSAA to win the final. Kellenberg won the championship last season.
St. Anthony's has endured a lot of injuries this season, especially after a car accident injured four players in late January. Kerrin Maurer, the team's leading scorer at the time, was lost for the season with a broken ankle and fractured hip.
The Friars spread the ball around and don't have one focal point on offense. No team member has scored more than 19 points in one game. The Friars are tough to beat on the boards because of 6-1 Symone Kelly and 6-2 Micki Impellizeri. Mimi Lizza and Rebecca Musgrove form a solid backcourt and Maggie Bill gives the Friars a good starting unit with each of them capable of leading the team in scoring. Johanna Impellizeri, Shannon White and Jennifer Sixsmith are key contributors off the bench. The Friars' strength is defense and their pressure usually leads to points on offense.
The Friars played Medgar Evers on Jan. 23, two days after the car accident. They had just six active players and won, 52-42.
