St. James 9/11 memorial taking shape
St. James fire officials hope to complete a 9/11 memorial by the 10th anniversary of the 2001 terror attacks.
The centerpiece of the memorial will be a 7-ton steel column recovered from the rubble of the north tower of the World Trade Center, said Tom Donohue, a member and past captain of the St. James Fire Department. The column, in storage in a hangar at Kennedy Airport, is to be moved next month to an ironworks shop, which will prepare it for the memorial.
The memorial will be at Woodlawn and Jefferson avenues, at a site owned by the St. James Fire District. The department hopes to unveil it on Sept. 11.
Donohue, who works for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said the department is trying to raise $75,000 to pay contractors.
Douglas Oelschlager, 36, a captain in the St. James Eagle Hook and Ladder Company, was among the 343 New York City firefighters who died at the Twin Towers. But the memorial will be dedicated to all the nearly 3,000 people who died Sept. 11, Donohue said.
“This is for everybody who lost their lives,” he said.
