State Education Commissioner Dr. John King met with education officials today at Oyster Bay High School after he canceled a town hall-style meeting in Garden City on the Common Core curriculum.
King canceled the Garden City meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, after a similar public forum in Poughkeepsie. YouTube video shows parents screaming at King over the controversial curriculum.
According to King, special interest groups disrupted the dialogue and the meeting.
King says Common Core is a new way of measuring students' ability to think and reason. He says it will take time for students and parents to get familiar with the materials.
Rosemarie Catanzariti, a retired teacher and grandmother, says Common Core is focusing more on a test than education.
