James Bluett, Northport: The state parks department needs to maintain the Sunken Meadow Park picnic area, which is suffering from neglect and erosion. The department should cut down 30 to 40 of the smaller trees, especially in the east and south sides, and thin out the rest. It should plant grass seed in the fall and watch the picnic area look like a whole new place.
The picnic area has been eroding each year because the trees have grown into one another. Overcrowded, the trees will fight for space. If sunlight doesn't reach the ground and the roots take over, then it's a woods, not a picnic area. The picnic area needs 50 percent sunlight.
