Matchup: Sachem East (21-1) vs. Ossining (20-4)
Game time: Friday, 6:15 p.m, Hudson Valley CC.
The Flaming Arrows are “loving life right now,” coach Matt Brisson said. For good reason.
This scrappy bunch earned its first Long Island championship since 2010 and now seeks to do what that group did three years ago: capture the state title.
Standing in the way, though, is Ossining, a team ranked 28th in the country and led by UConn-bound star Saniya Chong. The 5-9 guard, averaging 38.2 points per game, set the New York record with 102 three-pointers this season and needs 52 points to surpass the state single-season mark.
“She’s phenomenal and it’ll be cool to face a player of that caliber,” Brisson said, “but over the years we’ve gone against girls like Samantha Prahalis, Bria Hartley and Stefanie Dolson. We won’t be star struck.”
Sachem East is a balanced team that relies on its versatility and defense. They’re led by point guard Katie Doherty and forward Kathleen Everson. Senior twins Allie and Sammy Drake can guard the post and perimeter, and Emily Carmel is a steady outside shooter.
If they advance: Championship game is Saturday, 8:45 p.m., vs. Gates-Chili (23-0) or Cicero-North Syracuse (19-3).
