Steve Matthews’ Belmont picks for Wednesday, May 11
Best Bet: CAPTAIN MOSS (7)
Best Value: PARK RANGER (5)
FIRST: Laudati entry: Jegos Fire and Coral Ridge have experience edge in field of newcomers. Three to Thirteen debuts for Kelly Breen; follow the money. Dr. Koy is from a potent first-out stable (Christophe Clement); paddock and tote appraisal are musts.
SECOND: Rare Eagle packs solid late and kick and logged win at Belmont Park. Swivel is riding a forward line on the numbers. Interior Secretary was a winner in most recent main-track start; don’t ignore.
THIRD: Northern Screamer drops and makes peak start of form cycle. Know It All Anna is speedy and rested; dangerous. Jemmabelle could impact if pace meltdown ensues.
FOURTH: Ro Bear is firing bullets for first start since September; primed and ready. Cloontia looms the controlling speed if able to escape AE list. Dot Matrix logged sold numbers in both grass starts last fall; very playable.
FIFTH: Park Ranger moves to grass after dominant victory on Big A dirt last out; transfers razor-sharp form. Chunnel was a winner on Belmont turf last fall and compiled purposeful work tab for return to preferred footing; very dangerous. Protection was a fast-figured second in last; logical, short-priced player.
SIXTH: Genuine Happiness has trained consistently since second to a much-the-best winner in debut; more to give. Deedeezee is working sharply for first start since July for Todd Pletcher; be no surprise. Indulgent debuts for Kiaran McLaughlin; could be the goods.
SEVENTH: Captain Moss is 1-for-1 on Belmont sod and fired half-mile bullet for first start in 54 days. Elroi was a determined second in last; big-time danger. Shkspeare Shaliyah packs a potent late wallop on best efforts and tallied both lifetime wins on Belmont grass; worth long look at long price.
EIGHTH: Finn’s Girl notched swift final fraction when pace and trip compromised in last start; forward move predicted. Width returns to grass after useful tighter on Laurel dirt last time; dangerous. Gliding By endured rough trip in same last race as top selection; big-time stretch threat on best.
NINTH: We Did drops, gets favorable cutback to sprint and should pack intensified kick in weak nightcap. Southern Gentleman tallied improved pace and final figures when a strong second in last; very dangerous. Starago is 0-for-25 but owns fast numbers on best efforts; don’t dismiss. Croke Park makes first start with maiden-claiming tag for Mike Maker; must be factored into the mix.
