A national magazine has named Stony Brook University as one of America’s “100 best values in public colleges.” The February issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, published Tuesday, ranks Stony Brook 39th.

The magazine said it chose campuses that “exemplify excellent academics while keeping their in-state and out-of-state costs to a minimum.”

In all, 10 campuses in the State University of New York system made the list. Two came in ahead of Stony Brook: Binghamton at five and Geneseo at nine. Kiplinger’s is one of several publications that name “best values” in higher education using factors such as admission and graduation rates, student-faculty ratios and cost.

Kiplinger’s, which has ranked “best buys” since 1998, has included Stony Brook in several of its lists, including 2006, 2007 and 2009. In recent years, Stony Brook also was ranked in the top 1 percent of universities worldwide by the London Times, and several of its programs were cited in a recent U.S. News and World Report ranking of “America’s Best Graduate Schools.”
