Stony Brook medical school gets $3.3M grant

Stony Brook University’s medical school will soon have a program to help postdoctoral fellows who want to work on research and education, thanks to a $3.3 million federal grant.

The  National Institute of General Medical Sciences, a part of the National Institutes of Health,  gave the 5-year research and career development award to Stony Brook University School of Medicine, the school announced Thursday.

With this grant, Stony Brook will train three dozen postdoctoral fellows to teach at SUNY Old Westbury, Suffolk County Community College or Brooklyn College.

“Stony Brook University is pleased to partner with these educational institutions under the NIH’s IRACDA program to enhance the careers of our postdoctoral fellows and broaden higher education opportunities for under-represented populations pursing research careers in the biomedical sciences,” Stony Brook president Samuel Stanley Jr. said in a release.

The NIH program’s goals are to develop trained scientists for future biomedical, behavioral and clinical research.

Each postdoctoral fellow will pair with a faculty mentor for three years of research. The fellows will teach in their third years at one of the three partner colleges.
