Stony Brook students to get more bus service

Suffolk County and Stony Brook University have partnered on a deal to provide increased Saturday bus service to university students at no cost to them, officials said.
Starting on May 26, Stony Brook students will be able to ride Suffolk County Transit’s S60/S69 and 3D routes for free by showing their student identification cards.
The routes will give Stony Brook students easier access to off-campus locations for dining, shopping and leisure, including Smith Haven Mall and Port Jefferson Village.
Under the deal, Stony Brook will reimburse the county for the cost of the students’ fares. Stony Brook expects to reduce students’ fuel usage 3,500 gallons annually, school officials said.
“The partnership is terrific for students and it’s good for the environment,” said Barbara Chernow, vice president for administration at Stony Brook University.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone called it a “win-win” for the county and the university.
“This will make it easier for students to support local businesses and take cars off the road,” Bellone said.
