LIRR on track after freight locomotive derails
A derailment of a New York & Atlantic Railway freight locomotive in Wyandanch temporarily suspensed service early Friday on the Long Island Rail Road's Ronkonkoma Branch, officials said. Morning rush-hour service was not affected, however, by the accident despite initial concerns it might be, LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan said. -- John Valenti

Zoning workshop: Riverhead Town officials will hold a two-hour workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church (1488 N. Country Rd., Wading River) to give homeowners a chance to talk with a town consultant reviewing zoning in the hamlet. Hale Smith Day: The Village of Freeport will celebrate its annual Hale Smith Day Sunday at 1 p.m. at the South Nassau Unitarian Universalist Congregation (228 S. Ocean Ave).
