An NYPD officer escaped serious injury after a suspect fired at the officer and his partner on a street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan Monday, the bullet, Commissioner Ray Kelly said, deflected by an ammo magazine on the officer's gunbelt. -- JOHN VALENTI
