Matt Cain pitched the 22nd perfect game in major league history and first for the Giants, striking out a career-high 14 and getting help from two spectacular catches to beat the Houston Astros, 10-0. last night.

Cain's 125-pitch masterpiece for San Francisco featured a pair of great plays by his corner outfielders, and he got pinch hitter Jason Castro on a grounder to third for his 27th and final out with the sellout crowd of 42,298 roaring.

Leftfielder Melky Cabrera chased down Chris Snyder's one-out flyball in the sixth, scurrying back to make a leaping catch at the wall. Cain raised both arms and slapped his glove in delight when Cabrera made the play. Then, rightfielder Gregor Blanco ran into deep right-center to make a diving catch on the warning track and rob Jordan Schafer for the first out of the seventh. The 27-year-old pitcher hugged Blanco in the dugout after the inning.

Phil Humber of the Chicago White Sox tossed the previous perfect game at Seattle on April 21. This is the second time in three years there have been two perfect games in the same season.

Nationals 6, Blue Jays 2: Stephen Strasburg won his fifth straight start and Tyler Moore hit the first two home runs of his career as the visiting Nationals beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 6-2, to complete a three-game sweep.

Strasburg (8-1) left after six innings because of what manager Davey Johnson called a "slight cut" on his middle finger, something that happened as the righthander was trimming a ragged nail between innings.

Red Sox 10, Marlins 2: Felix Doubront (7-3) allowed only three hits while pitching a career-high seven innings and David Ortiz hit his 15th homer and drove in three runs for visiting Boston.

Miami's frustration boiled over in the ninth inning with a confrontation involving manager Ozzie Guillen and Heath Bell. Guillen went to the mound to remove his closer and became angry when Bell lobbied to remain in the game. They then had another testy exchange in the dugout, and coach Joey Cora had to step between them.

Phillies 9, Twins 8: Jim Thome homered and drove in four runs for the visiting Phillies. -- AP
