LIRR union leaders and MTA management met Sunday for the first time since the train system shut down.

The two sides met in Manhattan after being summoned by the National Mediation Board, an independent agency that coordinates labor relations for American railroad and airline industries, according to union and MTA officials.

Talks were ongoing at the MTA headquarters in lower Manhattan as of early Sunday evening, according to a union spokesman who declined to share details about the discussion.
