Talking to LIers at the subway in Jamaica
Joel Atwell, a commercial porter on Manhattan’s East Side, said his ride from Central Islip to bus from Huntington to Jamaica was "actually kind of smooth" and "faster than expected," though it will likely turn his usual 2-hour commute into a 3-hour one.
He normally starts work at 6 a.m. but faced a lengthy second leg on the subway's F line.
Atwell, 44, said he supported LIRR workers and was willing to accept some inconvenience if it meant they'd get pension and pay benefits.
Doris Bell, a nurse at Brooklyn Children’s School, woke up at 4 a.m. to catch an early bus from Huntington.
"I hope they get to the table today," she said of MTA management and unions. The commuters "are in the middle of all of this," she said.
Dr. Vincent D’amore, 59, of Northport, said he got to the Huntington station at 4 a.m. and was first on the bus, which took about an hour to reach Jamaica. "I worried for nothing," he said.
