A ferry carrying roughly 20 NYU Langone Manhattan-based employees departed from Glen Cove’s ferry terminal early this morning, Glen Cove Mayor Pamela Panzenbeck said.
"It wasn’t very crowded," she said.
The city’s harbor patrol told the mayor there were 18 to 20 passengers on the 149-passenger ferry. It departed at 5:38 a.m. from Glen Cove and was scheduled to return at about 8 p.m., she said.
"It’s the first day," Panzenbeck said, explaining one reason why the boat was largely empty.
"They approached us a few weeks ago to do this," she said. "They obviously value their employees."
The Glen Cove City Council passed two resolutions on Tuesday permitting New York Water Taxi to transport NYU Langone employees to and from the city’s ferry terminal. The city has tried unsuccessfully for years to establish regular service from the terminal, which was completed in 2015.
