Students are taking to the Carmans River Friday to learn more about the river’s ecosystem and to use scientific techniques to analyze its water quality.

Participants from five schools are attending “A Day in the Life of the Carmans River 2012,” which is sponsored by the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission, Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Portal to Discovery and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The participating school districts are the Longwood, William Floyd, Patchogue-Medford and South Country districts.

The estimated group of 150 students will fan out across 13 waterfront sites between Middle Island and Shirley, and use field techniques to describe the locations, catch fish in nets, collect water and invertebrate samples, and analyze water chemistry, according to event organizers.

Representatives from the DEC and ecology groups Ducks Unlimited and Cornell Cooperative Extension will help the students at some sites with fly-fishing and other projects.
