Study: Glenwood Landing safe from waste
A former dry-cleaning operation in Glenwood Landing classified as a hazardous waste site is not likely to impact drinking water, and further action is not required, the state Department of Environmental Conservation said recently after a lengthy study and comment period.
Penetrex Processing Co. operated the site at 1 Shore Rd. from the 1950s until 1984, when the facility was abandoned. Tetrachloroethene was dumped into soil and on-site dry wells, the DEC said, “due to negligence and sloppy housekeeping.”
The site was classified as an inactive hazardous waste site in 1987, and the property owner began cleanup and remediation in 2001.
The property is mostly covered with buildings and pavement, and the public is not expected to come in contact with contaminated soils.
No other cleanup has been ordered for the site.
