Suffolk baseball players of the week

As the Suffolk playoffs begin today we take a look back at the best performances from the final week of the regular season. With playoff berths and League titles on the line it was this group of players who came up with big games.

Cepeda helped lead Ward Melville to a three-game sweep that clinched the League I title for the Patriots. Cepeda picked up a complete-game win in Game 2 of the series and went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs in the final game. His defense at second base was key in the contest as well.

The senior righthander has been phenomenal all season and particularly down the stretch. He struck out 16 in a complete-game five-hitter against St. Anthony’s on May 7 and followed it up with a complete-game shutout in which he allowed two hits and struck out nine against Kellenberg on May 13.

Finger struck out 11 and allowed only one hit over six innings in a win over Port Jefferson on May 8.

Mattero pitched a complete-game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Eastport-South Manor defeated Harborfields on May 6. It was Mattero’s first career varsity win.

Ognibene pitched a four-hit shutout and picked up nine strikeouts as Deer Park clinched its first League V title since 2004 on May 7.

The Bayport-Blue Point lefty continued his dominating season by pitching a complete-game one-hitter with 11 strikeouts to defeat Shoreham-Wading River on May 7.

Rotunno had two big days at the plate against Copiague, going 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs on May 7 and 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs on May 10. He was also the winning pitcher in the game on May 7.

Vricciariello pitched a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in a May 10 victory over Newfield. Vricciariello also went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs at the plate.

Vila was dominant in Pierson/Bridgehampton’s final series of the season. He allowed only one hit and struck out 18 in the first game and combined to go 7-for-9 with three doubles in the last two games.

The Bay Shore ace pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run and four hits and striking out seven and was also 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and five RBIs in a 5-4 Bay Shore win over Connetquot on May 7 that kept their playoff hopes alive.
