Suffolk cops to conduct training in Riverhead
Suffolk County police will be allowed to conduct motorcycle training on the western runway of the former Northrop Grumman Corp. manufacturing plant in Calverton under an agreement approved Wednesday night by the Riverhead Town Board.
The board voted unanimously to approve the measure even as members continue to debate how property at the site, now known as Enterprise Park, should be developed. One possibility includes short-term leases to farmers.
The contract with the police department would not generate any revenue, and the county agreed not to hold the town liable for the costs of any accidents that might occur there.
At the meeting, the town board also reappointed three seasonal pump-out boat operators and three seasonal groundskeepers in an effort to beef up the workforce for the summer.
It also approved a change in town code that sets a maximum weight limit of 8 tons for trucks using four local streets — Connecticut Avenue, Line Road, River Road and Wading River Manor Road.
