Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has repealed a controversial $4 “twilight” parking fee that affected two county beaches, officials announced at a rally to protest the fee in Shirley on Monday.

“The county executive agrees that it’s a bad idea and he’s going to reverse the policy starting tonight,” Suffolk Legis. Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk) announced at the rally, which was held at the Smith Point Marina and attended by more than 100 residents.

The $4-a-car charge from 5-8 p.m. affected nearby Smith Point County Park in Shirley and Cupsogue Beach County Park in Westhampton Beach. It started on June 23.

Addressing the crowd at the rally, Suffolk County Legis. Kate Browning (D-Shirley) said: "You don’t belong here, you belong at the beach, where you can pull your car in and it’s not going to cost you anything.”
