Three major Suffolk County roads will be getting $12 million in improvements as part of recently passed legislation.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy signed a bill appropriating $8 million to upgrade Wicks Road and Fifth Avenue in Islip as well as $4.1 million to revitalize Nicolls Road in Brookhaven, his office announced Tuesday.

“These roadway repairs will improve safety for pedestrian travel and enhance capacity along two of Suffolk’s most critical thoroughfares,” Levy said in a statement. “By revitalizing these ‘gateways to the shores,’ we are also paving the way for increased travel to our downtowns.”

As part of the projects, improvements will include reworked intersections, pavements, drainage and sidewalks. Officials said new curbs and pavement markings will improve the traffic signal system.

“This project will be a big boost for travelers along Nicolls Road, a vital corridor and passageway to many major commercial and industrial centers in Suffolk,” Levy said in the statement.
