Summer drive-in movies begin tonight

The Town of Babylon’s summer movie series starts tonight at 8:30 p.m. with a drive-in screening of “Dolphin Tale” at Overlook Beach.

For the rest of the summer, free movies will show be screened every other Monday at 8:30 p.m. on Town Hall Lawn. The schedule is: “Hugo,” July 9; “Kung Fu Panda 2,” July 23; “Beetlejuice,” Aug. 6; “The Muppets,” Aug. 20.

“We’re trying to encourage people to take the summer months to bond with their children,” said Town supervisor Rich Schaffer. “Hang out, have some popcorn, enjoy a nice night.”

Movies were picked by the department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, he said.

His own pick for a summer movie is the 1972 farce, “What’s Up, Doc?” starring Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal.

“Probably one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, and I watch it a couple of times every year,” he said. “But I don’t know how many other people would want to see it.”

Each carload attending tonight’s movie is asked to donate $10 to benefit the 9/11 Hometown Memorial, located between Cedar and Overlook beaches.
