A $23 million bridge project will partially close lanes on Sunrise Highway in Amityville starting Wednesday, the state Department of Transportation said.

The project, which replaces the Route 110 bridge over Sunrise Highway, will partially close highway lanes between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and from 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., the agency said in a news release.

Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., a single travel lane in one or both directions may be closed; between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., one or two lanes may be closed in one or both directions, the release said.

Ramps also will be completely closed for a short duration during each construction period.

The release noted that at least one travel lane in each direction of Sunrise Highway will remain open at all times.

The closures are expected to be in effect Monday through Friday as needed, for about one month, to install temporary concrete barriers along Sunrise Highway and the perimeters of the ramps. These will aid in the construction of a temporary bridge, the release said.

Drivers should plan to take alternate routes to avoid delays. Ramp closures are expected to last no longer than one hour, and detours will be in place.

Additional travel advisories will be issued as the project progresses, the release said.

The new bridge will improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and about 90,000 motorists who travel over and under this bridge each day, the release said. The bridge is being completely replaced with a new, wider span that will feature larger shoulders and a sidewalk.

In addition, the new bridge will increase vertical clearance above Route 27 to help reduce the possibility of trucks striking the bridge.
