While the subject of the article is cheerless ["Longtime HHH schools chief to retire," News, March 10], I applaud Newsday for giving a pat on the back to the achievements of the Half Hollow Hills school district on account of all of us teachers who work here.

As Sheldon Karnilow moves on, he leaves behind a committed team that will continue to work tirelessly on behalf of each and every one of our students. His legacy will push us forward through these discouraging times of pessimism and teacher-bashing so that we can get on with the real business of educating.

Thank you, Newsday, for the recognition with my morning news.

As we teachers have always known; successes should be awarded with a pat on the back that reaches even beyond the joy of raising test scores.
