Supervisor Kaiman to leave for state post

North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman will step down this month to take the state storm-recovery position to which he was appointed by the governor this summer.

Kaiman, 51, said he plans to resign as town supervisor the week of Sept. 23 to become special adviser for Long Island storm recovery to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, who announced the new position in July.

"Time is of the essence with the project I'm doing with the governor," Kaiman said. "It really does require my immediate attention, so it is time."

Tuesday night's town board meeting will be the last for Kaiman, who said he plans to issue a draft town budget to the board as one of his final acts.

Once Kaiman resigns, Deputy Town Supervisor Christopher Senior automatically becomes a nonvoting acting supervisor.

The board also can move to appoint someone. Kaiman said town attorney John Riordan is being considered for the role until a new supervisor takes office in January. Riordan said he was honored by the mention.

Democratic Nassau County Legis. Judi Bosworth and GOP town Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio are vying for the seat in the November election.
