About a half-dozen people spoke in favor of a proposal to allow on-leash dog walking in more Huntington parks during a public hearing on the measure at Tuesday’s town board meeting.

“This new program will provide exercise and socialization for both people and their dogs,” said Barbara Buscareno, the founder of the Long Island Dog Owners Group.

“It is something that will be welcome by so many,” Buscareno said.

Seven people spoke at the public hearing, all in support of the proposal sponsored by board member Mark Cuthbertson. The resolution seeks to amend town code to allow on-leash dog walking in town-approved locations.

The town recently completed a pilot project at Frazer Drive Park in Greenlawn, and now on-leash dog walking is permanently permitted there. The pilot was approved in 2011 after a 17-year-old girl was raped and robbed in a secluded area of the park in 2008.
