Survey: Gas prices higher on South Fork

Assemb. Fred W. Thiele Jr. (I-Sag Harbor) said gas prices on the South Fork of Long Island have come down, narrowing the gap of a few months ago when prices were at least 18 cents higher than neighboring western towns.
According to his own survey done Dec. 12, prices were an average of 14 cents higher on the South Fork than in other Long Island towns. Prices on the South Fork were $3.71 on average, surveyed at gas stations along Montauk Highway. According to AAA, gas prices averaged $3.57 in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and $3.55 in the state.
Although the AAA does regional surveys, Thiele said in a news release, there is no survey of just the East End, and specifically the South Fork, which is why Thiele has been doing his own survey, and sending the results to the state attorney general’s office.
Thiele added that prices on the North Fork also continue to drop. A gallon of gas is now about $3.50 there.
