Suspect detained in beating of Giants fan
CRIMEAn arrest in fan attack
A tip from a parole officer led to the arrest yesterday of the key suspect in the brutal beating of a Giants fan outside Dodger Stadium after the rival teams' season opener March 31.
Suspect Giovanni Ramirez, 31, was detained in an early-morning raid on an East Hollywood apartment building and was believed to be the "primary aggressor'' in the beating that left Bryan Stow, 42, with brain damage, police said. Ramirez later was booked for assault with a deadly weapon and was being held on $1 million bail, police said. Police said he is one of two suspects sought in the beating, along with a woman who drove them from the scene.
Twenty full-time detectives reportedly have pursued more than 630 leads in the case.
Last week, doctors in San Francisco said Stow has been able to open his eyes, but he remains in critical condition. Stow, a paramedic and father of two, had been put in a medically induced coma to help prevent seizures.
CYCLING
More problems for Lance
New revelations from Lance Armstrong's former teammates on "60 Minutes" and recent requests by federal authorities for evidence in France have fed a sense of growing trouble for the world's most famous cyclist.
Former Armstrong teammate Tyler Hamilton told "60 Minutes" he saw the seven-time Tour de France winner use EPO during his first Tour victory in 1999. Though an investigation by cycling's international federation dismissed those controversial samples, they clearly are back in play as the feds investigate whether Armstrong's U.S. Postal team engaged in systematic doping, a case that could lead to charges of fraud and conspiracy.
AUTO RACING
Patrick, Andretti qualify
Michael Andretti's team finally overcame its May curse.
The rain held off to give Danica Patrick a second chance, and James Jakes waved off his qualifying attempt, giving Marco Andretti one more shot to make the Indianapolis 500. Patrick and Marco Andretti took advantage of the good fortune and qualified for the centennial anniversary race at the Brickyard.
Patrick posted a four-lap average of 224.861 mph after it looked as if she might not even get to qualify. Her qualifying run of 224.861 put her in the No. 26 spot, the middle of Row 9. Andretti delivered an even more clutch performance in the final run, going 224.628 to qualify.
GYMNASTICS
Worlds staying in Tokyo
The world gymnastics championships will be held in Tokyo as originally planned. The International Gymnastics Federation decided there was no reason to move the worlds, the main qualifier for the 2012 Olympics in London, despite earlier concerns about high radiation levels after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.-- AP
