The Town of North Hempstead will host a series of public meetings next week, starting Monday, seeking comments about ways to build an Islandwide environmental sustainability plan.

The New York State Energy and Research Development Authority has provided a grant, which is intended to help create the plan, the town said. Among groups presenting ideas are the town, Northport-based “smart growth” nonprofit Vision Long Island, the Sustainability Institute at Molloy College and the Community Development Corp. of Long Island. The plan is intended to reduce greenhouse gases and create jobs.

The first meeting will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the “Yes We Can” Community Center in New Cassel, 141 Garden St.

Another town meeting is scheduled for Suffolk County residents on Tuesday at Islip Town Hall West, 401 Main St. An East End meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at Southampton Town Hall, 116 Hampton Rd.
