Symposium on Sandy tree damage at Hofstra

A symposium on Long Island trees and the damage caused to them by superstorm Sandy will be held at Hofstra University next week.
“Arboriculture in our Changing Landscape” will be at the Hofstra University Student Center Theater in Hempstead Jan. 23 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Seven of the Island’s garden clubs and the New York Committee of The Garden Club of America, a nationwide organization concerned with environmental and horticultural issues, are presenting the event.
Speakers will include Bruce Fraedrich of Bartlett Tree Research, Margery Daughtrey of the Cornell University Department of Plant Pathology, Christopher Roddick of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and Richard Weir of Horticultural Solutions in Oyster Bay. Fred Soviero, director of grounds and landscaping at Hofstra, will lead off with the history of the development of the Hofstra Arboretum.
The symposium’s focus is arboriculture — the cultivation, management and study of individual trees, shrubs and woody vines.
