Takeaways from Day 5 of practice
Here are some observations from the fifth practice of training camp:
- Both sides of the ball made plays in team competition.
Defensively, cornerback Brandon Stephens picked off a deflected Geno Smith pass. Linebacker Kiko Mauigoa forced a fumble on a catch-and-run by rookie Omar Cooper Jr. Defensive tackle Jowon Briggs had a “sack” on Smith. Rookie defensive lineman Darrell Jackson Jr. batted down a Cade Klubnik pass.
Offensively, Smith showed some good and not-so-good in completing 7-of-12 passes. There were some missed opportunities and some good throws, including one across his body in the middle of the field to tight end Mason Taylor and a sideline shot to Garrett Wilson, who toe-tapped to get his feet in.
Receiver Isaiah Williams also made a terrific over-the-shoulder catch that he hauled in before hitting the ground. Jeremy Ruckert was involved in the passing game. The Lindenhurst product caught four passes from Smith and Klubnik during team periods.
“The thing that I saw for the most part is I saw turnovers by the defense, I saw explosive plays by the offense, and I saw Geno do some really good things and really good things as far as ball placement and things like that,” Glenn said.
- Watching rookie David Bailey in pass-rushing drills, he used his speed to get past left tackle Olu Fashanu. Bailey tried power against right tackle Armand Membou, who used his strength to hold him off. Membou has stood his ground the last three practices.
- The kicking competition seems pretty close at this point: Jason Sanders made all eight of his field goal attempts from distances ranging from roughly 32-to-60 yards. Cade York was 7-of-8. His only miss was from 60 yards – it was short and to the right.
