Takeaways from the Giants' win over Miami

John Harbaugh will address reporters later today on a Zoom call. For now, here's some takeaways from the Giants' preseason win in Miami on Saturday.

• Jameis Winston finished 15-for-21 passing with 150 yards and no interceptions. There’s no doubt the Giants feel comfortable about their backup quarterback situation behind Jaxson Dart. Winston played clean and even showed off his legs on an 11-yard touchdown run.
• Expect more blitzing from the secondary this season. Dru Phillips had his forced fumble coming off a blitz. Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson wants his defensive backs to be physical, and that includes using them to make plays in the backfield.
• The running back pecking order remains fluid. Tyrone Tracy’s fumble without being hit hurt what should’ve been a great day running the ball. Najee Harris wasn’t signed to be a spectator. Friday’s preseason game with the Jets will be another indicator where Tracy stands if Skattebo starts and Harris takes a few snaps.
• Rookie left tackle J.C. Davis played the entire game (81 snaps) and helped keep a clean pocket for his quarterbacks. It was a strong statement that the sixth-round pick should make the roster.
• Darius Alexander had a great pass rush that forced a near sack in the third quarter. But on the next play, he was taken down to the ground while the Dolphins ran the ball to their left side. That’s why the Giants have played him heavy snaps in both preseason games. They need more consistency from the second-year defensive tackle who has great potential yet needs more great production.
• If anybody needs a great game Friday, it’s Odell Beckham Jr. He still can get open and create separation. But in two games, he hasn’t shown enough to make an impact and a missed touchdown catch Saturday will linger as a what-if moment. Another game at MetLife Stadium could be a last chance to show why he deserves a roster spot.
