At 3:13 p.m. Tuesday, a 22-foot tall steel beam was raised by a seven-member construction crew at the vast site in Melville that is to one day be Canon U.S.A.'s North American headquarters, marking a major milestone in what is currently Long Island's largest building project.

"I hope this project will stimulate the economy," said Canon U.S.A. chief executive Joe Adachi after the beam was raised in what will be the 668,296-square-foot building's data center.

Canon U.S.A., currently in Lake Success, plans to move into the new facility by the end of 2012. Adachi said Canon will employ more than 2,000 people at the new building.

Adachi said in an interview earlier that the building is the culmination of a 25-year dream. Canon had searched on and off Long Island for a new headquarters site before deciding on Melville.

"This is not only going to be a working space, but a living space as well," Adachi said. The building will include a fitness club and a relaxation room, he said.
