Teens can apply for youth jobs program

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced Monday the launch of NY Youth Works, a statewide program to encourage businesses to hire unemployed and disadvantaged youth.
The new program includes $25 million in tax credits for businesses and $62 million to support job training programs for eligible youth ages 16 to 24 in communities across New York, including the towns of Brookhaven and Hempstead.
Other areas eligible areas are Albany, Buffalo, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, New York City, Rochester, Schenectady, Syracuse, Utica, and Yonkers.
“With unemployment at over 40 percent among youth in our inner cities, New York must stand up and make sure our young people are a central part of our state’s economic recovery,” Cuomo said in a statement.
Under the program, businesses can earn tax credits of up to $4,000 for hiring eligible youth through July 1, 2012. Youths can earn up to $900 to cover their expenses if they get training from an authorized NY Youth Works provider.
Businesses and youths interested in participating in the program should visit www.jobs.ny.gov/youthworks or call the state Department of Labor at 877-226-5724.
