The Long Island Regional Economic Development Council has recommended these projects for immediate state funding because of their potential to create jobs.

1. "Smart Grid" Energy Research Center, run by Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory, to improve electricity delivery

2. Accelerate Long Island, an initiative to commercialize inventions coming from area research institutions

3. "Thought Box" building, near the LIRR station in Hicksville, for entrepreneurs starting information technology companies. Facility would include offices, housing and fitness center for tenants.

4. Expansion of Amneal Pharmaceuticals in Suffolk County, creating 400 jobs

5. Drug testing facility in Woodbury for Cold Spring Harbor Lab

6. Wyandanch Rising, a development to replace blight around the LIRR station with homes, businesses and worker training programs

7. Improvements to sewers in Hempstead Village, that could spur future development

8. Ronkonkoma-MacArthur Transit Hub, which links two key transportation services and redevelops blighted area with housing and businesses

9. Heartland Town Square, seeks to transform the former Pilgrim State Psychiatric Hospital into a minicity

10. Cold-Storage and Distribution Facility for farm products at Calverton

11. Increasing scallops stocks in Long Island bay waters

12. Partnership between Hofstra and Stony Brook universities to increase the number of engineering graduates

13. Initiative by schools, not-for-profits and laboratories to encourage students to go into careers in industries built around science, technology, engineering and math
