BEN BONHURSTSmithtown West, Sr.

Bonhurst didn't just have a great year, he had a historical one. The Florida State-bound thrower set the state indoor shot put record, tossing 65 feet at the L.I. Elite Track Invitational at St. Anthony's on Feb. 21. Instead of reveling in his glory, Bonhust took it all in stride, not satisfied with anything less than titles. And he got a few. Bonhurst won the winter state (63-71/4) and national (64-73/4) title in shot put. In the spring, Bonhurst showed that he isn't just a shot putter. He won the state Division I Discus title (183-09) . . . and the state shot put title (65-21/2), for good measure. His 67-3 shot put toss in Division I broke Liverpool's J.J Grant's state meet record of 65-41/2, set in 1985. He capped off his high school career with a national championship, tossing 65-93/4 at New Balance Nationals.

MIKE BRANNIGAN

Northport, Jr.

Made one final claim to his distance running supremacy in the final meet of the spring season, winning the national two mile championship in 8:53.59 at New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina. The time broke the Suffolk 2-mile record of 9:00.4, set by Sayville's Brian Dalpiaz in 2002, according to longislandxctf.com.

LUKE GERMANAKOSLynbrook, Jr.

Germanakos peaked at exactly the right time this winter, winning the state 600 title in 1:21.31, edging the competition by 0.24 seconds. He qualified for the trip to Cornell by winning the 600 at the Nassau state qualifier in 1:22.16. He won the Nassau Class B 600 in 1:23.79 and 300 in 35.84 seconds.

TIM MCGOWANNorthport, Sr.

McGowan won the winter state 3,200 meter championship in 9:07.80, the winter Suffolk Large School 3,200 championship in 9:58.25, and was second in the New Balance High School Boys Mile at February's Millrose Games in 4:10.28. McGowan also won the Division I 800 in 1:54.46 at the Suffolk Championships in the spring.

DENNIS RUSSELL

Longwood, Sr.

Late in the afternoon on the final day of spring states, Russell got his title. The senior won the state discus championship, throwing 185-5. Russell was second in the Division I discus on day one of the championships, throwing 183 feet. He won the Suffolk Division I shot put championship, tossing 59-81/4.

DASHAWN TAYLORLongwood, Sr.

Taylor won the long jump, flying 24 feet on the second day of the spring state championship. A day earlier, he was second in the Division I long jump championship, flying 23-91/2. Taylor won the Suffolk Division I long jump championship, flying 23-53/4.

Perhaps no team on L.I. made bigger statements than this one during the winter season. The Flyers won the state title in 7:55.80 and the national title in 7:40.80. Nearly a month earlier, the four won the George T. Eastment CHSAA Boys 4 x 800 at the Millrose Games in 7:53.03.

The four won the first winter 4 x 400 meter relay state championship in school history, coach Tim Dearie said. The 3:23.70 victory culminated in a fight-to-the-finish battle between Santelli and Warwick Valley's Jordan Burton. Two weeks later, the quartet won the SMR national title in 3:25.95 at the New Balance Nationals at The Armory.
