Are loved ones constantly asking you to speak louder? If so, it may be time for you to speak up and tell them to get their hearing checked.

Older adults who silently suffer from hearing loss and do not seek treatment are far more likely to suffer from depression and sad feelings than people who wear a hearing aid. Meanwhile, those who wear hearing aids are more likely to participate in social activities, boosting both their physical and emotional health. The findings were reported in a presentation at the American Psychological Association's annual meeting in August.

Even those who seek treatment waste precious years. The report noted that it takes the average adult about six years after first noticing hearing loss before getting a hearing assessment from a health professional.
