The New York Institute of Technology advised parents at a recent orientation to step to the sidelines and allow students to solve their own problems. Instead of being "helicopter parents," hovering over their children, some experts say "perimeter parenting" is better. 

Others, however, suggest having parents more involved in their children's college careers gives those kids a better chance at success.
