The Suffolk Scene: Commack to strike out cancer

Since its move to League I this year, the Commack softball machine has been rolling. A 14-1 record has put the Cougar’s at the head of the League’s class, and they’re a strong contender to go deep into the playoffs. But on Monday, they’ll be playing for more than just a “W”: they’ll be playing for a cure.

Commack will don pink jersey’s and host its first annual “strike out cancer” game at 4 p.m. against 2009 state champion Brentwood (1-13). Though admission is free, all other sales and the proceeds from a 50/50 raffle will be donated to finding a cure for breast cancer. The game was scheduled for Monday since it will be the first home game after Mother’s Day.

The cause hits especially close to home for at least one member of the Commack team, senior centerfielder Kristina Amato, who’s mother is a breast cancer survivor and has undergone 11 surgeries.

“This game is like a tribute to her mother and all the mothers and women that go through the struggles with this disease,” coach Harold Cooley said.

Said Amato: “She’s my inspiration and living proof of having courage and never giving up. She always kept her head up and never let anything get in the way of her dreams. Nor will I. She is my hero.”
