The Swimming Scene: Nassau v. Suffolk – Jan. 11th Edition
This is something I’m hoping to revisit in a few more weeks. It’s basically just a combination of the top Nassau and Suffolk times in each swimming event so we can see which county is dominating just a little bit more.
Note: I’m working on getting the top CHSAA times, so please don’t feel left out. If I get the times, I will incorporate them within this post so we’ll have an even clearer picture of the swimming scene on the Island.
200 Medley Relay:
1. Sachem North - 1:44.32
2. Great Neck South - 1:45.81
Suffolk wins, 1-0.
200 Freestyle
1. Chris Cremer (Sayville/BBP) – 1:45.36
2. Samuel Mo (Great Neck South) – 1:48.12
Suffolk wins, leads 2-0. These two names pop on the list numerous times, and if the standings were expanded to the top three-five times, they would be among the top swimmers in half of the events if not more. Cremer is a name everybody knows about. Mo is still young, just a sophomore, and it is going to be a lot of fun watching his times improve as his high school career continues, especially now that Great Neck South is a legitimate contender year-in, year-out.
200 Individual Medley
1. Samuel Mo (Great Neck South) – 2:00.06
2. Jesse Lohrer (Half Hollow Hills) – 2:02.00
Nassau wins, Suffolk leads 2-1.
50 Freestyle
1. Everett Vasquez (Patchogue-Medford) – 22.12
2. Austin Kowalsky (Bellmore Merrick) – 22.26
Suffolk wins, leads 3-1.
Diving
1. Ryan Savit (Half Hollow Hills) – 277.73
2. Anthony Steffanelli (Sachem East) – 253.35
3. Kyle Gannon (Deer Park/N Babylon) – 238.17
4. Brandon Graham (Sachem North) – 227.02
5. Leroy Farrell (Hauppauge) – 222.30
6. Peter Magliuglo (Manhasset) – 220.45
Suffolk wins, leads 4-1. Just a huge gap here, the largest of any event on this list. Savit being the top diver is certainly no surprise, but the distance between him and the top Nassau swimmer just shows what an elite performer he is in the event.
100 Butterfly
1. Austin Kowalsky (Bellmore Merrick) – 53.58
2. Kyle Wilson (Sachem East) – 53.83
Nassau wins, Suffolks leads 4-2.
100 Freestyle
1. Edd Hausmann (Deer Park/N Babylon) – 49.26
2. Chris Cremer (Sayville/BBP) – 49.28
3. Nicholas Spinella (Sewanhaka) – 49.31
Suffolk wins, leads 5-2.
500 Freestyle
Lowell Nickey (Cold Spring Harbor) – 4:49.76
Chris Cremer (Sayville/BBP) – 4:52.52
Nassau wins, Suffolk leads 5-3.
200 Freestyle Relay
1. Sayville/BBP – 1:32.89
2. Jericho – 1:35.53
Suffolk wins, leads 6-3.
100 Backstroke
1. Nicholas Spinella (Sewanhaka) – 56.30
2. Everett Vasquez (Patchogue-Medford) – 56.73
Nassau wins, Suffolk leads 6-4.
100 Breaststroke
1. Ben Ching (Great Neck South) – 1:02.84
2. Samuel Mo (Great Neck South) – 1:02.86
3. Jesse Lohrer (Half Hollow Hills) – 1:04.10
Nassau wins, Suffolk clings to a slim 6-5 lead.
400 Freestyle Relay
1. Sayville/BBP – 3:26.97
2. Cold Spring Harbor – 3:30.00
Suffolk wins, final score is 7-5.
So Suffolk comes out on top at this point, but not by a huge margin. One event goes in Nassau’s favor and we have a tied county race.
The recent turnover in Nassau (the “fall” of Long Beach and rise of Great Neck South) and the consistency in Suffolk (Half Hollow Hills), points to Suffolk having a slight leg up in the sport at this point.
What do you think? Is Nassau on its way back to domination with promising young swimmers like Mo? Does Suffolk get a leg up because of the experience of swimmers like Cremer and Savit? Or something else?
